REAL ID Deadline is Coming: What Private Jet Travelers Need to Know

As of May 7, 2025, the REAL ID Act will be officially enforced across the United States. For our charter clients, this means a shift in the documentation required to board private domestic flights. Whether you’re flying from Teterboro to Miami or coast to coast, here’s everything you need to know to stay compliant and avoid travel disruptions.

What Is REAL ID and Why It Matters

The REAL ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 to establish minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. Starting May 7, 2025, every traveler age 18 or older will need a REAL ID-compliant form of identification to fly within the United States.

Acceptable Forms of REAL ID for Air Travel:

  • A REAL ID-compliant driver’s license (look for the star in the upper corner)

  • U.S. passport or passport card

  • DHS Trusted Traveler Program card (e.g., Global Entry)

  • Military ID or other federally recognized identification

How REAL ID Impacts Private Jet Charter Flights

While private jet travel offers exclusivity and convenience, TSA identification requirements still apply to all Part 135 charter operations. This means:

  • Fly Alliance passengers must present a valid REAL ID or acceptable alternative when flying domestically.

  • Passengers without compliant ID may be denied boarding or face travel delays.

  • These requirements affect both first-time flyers and frequent private jet travelers alike.

Fly Alliance is actively updating internal procedures and staff training to align with the new regulations, ensuring a seamless boarding process.

How to Get Your REAL ID Before the Deadline

To ensure smooth travel on your next Fly Alliance charter, take these steps now:

1. Check Your Current ID

Does your driver’s license have a star in the top corner? If not, it’s likely not REAL ID-compliant.

2. Gather Your Documents

To apply for a REAL ID, you’ll need:

  • Proof of identity (birth certificate or valid passport)

  • Proof of Social Security number

  • Two documents showing your current address

  • Proof of lawful status

3. Visit Your Local DMV

Many states allow online scheduling or mobile outreach units. Don’t wait—DMV wait times may increase as the deadline nears.
